        I have been teaching subjects of information storage and retrieval, information science, information systems, knowledge organization, research methodology and digital libraries since 2011. My research interest includes information seeking behaviour, cognitive and social issues of information process and digital technology. I have published considerable numbers of articles in national and international journals in addition to chapters in books and research papers.  I am interested in open access movement as a significant tool for narrowing the digital divide (through knowledge sharing) between the third world countries and the developed nations which continue to widen between the have and have-nots. This in its turn can have positive impact as an instrument for sustainable economic development. Therefore, I'm paying much attention to the use and utilization of open source content management systems such as Greenstone, Eprints, Fedora, and Dspace.

MY LATEST RESEARCH

        The aim of this paper is to explore Greenstone open source digital library software which considered to be one of most essential open-source Content Management Systems (CMSs) that are available for use in creating, organizing, and managing Arabic content on the Internet. It focuses on the appropriateness of the system for Arabic content from different perspectives, such as its ability to support the Arabic language and to sustain and maintain different file formats. It also aims to examine Greenstone software and discuss its weaknesses and strengths in terms of managing Arabic digital content. Greenstone search facilities were tested and evaluated in this study using a quasi-experimental approach. The National Oil Cooperation standalone CDS/ISIS database in Libya (NOC) was converted into web interface using Greenstone software to explore the system’s functionality and to test its search and browse facilities. This database consists of 3400 Arabic bibliographic records. As previously stated, this paper aims to assess Greenstone retrieval facilities in the context of Arabic digital content to provide a full picture of the system’s suitability for the Arabic language and to highlight its limitations and strong points in the overall process of information retrieval.

       The world is witnessing a considerable transformation from print based-formats to electronic-based formats thanks to advanced computing technology, which has a profound impact on the dissemination of nearly all previous formats of publications into digital formats on computer networks. Text, still and moving images, sound tracks, music, and almost all known formats can be stored and retrieved on computer magnetic disk. Over the last two decades, a number of special libraries and information centres in the Arab world have introduced electronic resources into their library services. Very few have implemented automated and integrated systems. Despite the importance of designing digital libraries not merely for accessing to or retrieval of information but rather for the provision of electronic services, hardly any special library has started the design of digital library services.
